Pakefield Primary

Year 1

In Year 1 we build on the progress our children make in the Early Years Foundation stage by enabling them to build and develop the knowledge and understanding they need to become successful learners. We provide them with a range of skills that allow them to engage with the National curriculum in a child centred way.

Our year 1 learning environment, both indoors and outdoors, is designed to allow children to thrive as independent learners. Learning is supported by skilled staff who allow children to explore ideas, take risks and find out for themselves. Skills taught are embedded through well planned activities, continuous provision and robust routines. Children are encouraged to be responsible for their own learning and complete challenges across the week that enable them to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding they have gained during direct teaching.

Children’s creative and critical thinking is developed through an enquiry based learning approach which allows children to practice skills which include, research, questioning and recording. They are encouraged to follow their own lines of enquiry within a broader theme.
