Governor Monitoring

Governor monitoring visits vary in style and format but generally feedback will be noted, along with any issues or next steps to be considered.  Feedback is published online for parents and the wider school community to view.

Below is a brief summary from the governor monitoring visits that have been undertaken in the last year or two, starting with the most recent:

5 July 2017 – Governors carried out pupil perceptions looking at behaviour, safety and welfare.  100% of the children asked agreed positively with the statements ‘I am happy at my school’, ‘I feel safe at school’ and ‘I think other children are friendly in school’.  If the children had concerns around unsafe behaviour or bullying they knew who to speak to.  A small minority of children said they had been concerned about behaviour in their class but they assured governors that their current teacher had resolved the problem.  Governors felt it was a very positive picture from the children. 

May/June 2017 - Governors broke down into smaller groups to undertake monitoring.  The Teaching & Learning group met with the Maths Leadership team to discuss in depth the progress being made against the maths development plan.  The Behaviour & Welfare group observed a Friday assembly to see how the school celebrates pupil success and promotes personal development.  In addition the Safeguarding Governor carried out a monitoring visit focused on online safety and the H&S Governor carried out a regular health and safety visit with the Site Manager.

9 February 2017 - Governors carried out a monitoring visit to review safeguarding within the school from the perspective of pupils, staff and governors.  Governors ate lunch with the pupils and were able to ask a number of questions around safeguarding.  They were then able to see first-hand the extensive provision that is in place for pupils at lunchtime.  Governors were able to speak to staff and they concluded their visit by reviewing governors' role and training in safeguarding.  Please click here to read governors' comments.

6 December 2016 - Governors met to review and discuss the school's RAISEonline data and to review the School Development Plan (SDP).  It is important that governors understand the full data that is available in order to effectively hold school leaders to account for the educational performance of all pupils.  Governors were then able to see how the areas for improvement identified by RAISEonline had been addressed in the SDP for the following year.

6 October 2016 - Governors carried out a learning walk with the Headteacher.  They were able to see the changes that had been made during the summer, in particular the relocation of the library.  Governors then received Finance training from the Business Manager; this had been identified by governors as a training need.  Please click here to read Governors’ comments following the learning walk.

29 June 2016 - Governors met to review the school's vision and values.  Governors discussed whether the current vision accurately reflected the 'heart' of the school and what it was aiming to achieve for its children.  Governors then discussed what they would like the school to look like in 5 years' time and how this could be incorporated in a new vision statement. 

21 March 2016 – Governors joined pupils over lunchtime to consider the impact of pupil welfare, personal development and behaviour.  Prior to the lunchbreak starting, governors were briefed and given 7 questions to consider.  Governors were encouraged to talk to as many pupils and staff as possible, and to gather a range of evidence.  Governors ate a school lunch with the pupils and then joined them on the playground.  After lunch the governors reconvened to discuss the evidence gathered in relation to the questions set.  The visit had been very positive and you can read the full report here.

26 January 2016 – Governors carried out a visit to identify the impact of Talk 4 Writing across the school, following staff training at the start of January.  At the start of the session governors were given an overview of Talk 4 Writing by the Key Stage 1 leader and given 4 questions to consider and gather evidence for.  Governors (working in pairs) were then accompanied by senior members of staff to visit classrooms to see Talk 4 Writing in action.  Governors then reconvened to discuss what they had seen; strengths and next steps were noted.  Governors had valued the opportunity to see how the children had enthusiastically embraced Talk 4 Writing across all year groups.  Their full report can be viewed here.

2 December 2015 – Governors received a presentation from the Headteacher and Assessment Leader on the new system of assessment (following the abolition of levels) and the impact of the new National Curriculum.  The implications and impact of these changes were discussed fully.  It is essential that governors understand the new assessment methods if they are to effectively monitor data and offer appropriate challenge. 

19 May 2015 – Governors (working in pairs) carried out Pupil Perception interviews.  Six children were interviewed from each of the following year groups: Year 2, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6.  The pupils’ answers and thoughts were recorded and governors then reconvened to discuss pupils’ responses.  Governors found it valuable to hear the children’s perceptions of school; a summary of their responses can be viewed here.

17 March 2015 – Governors met to review and discuss the results of a website audit checklist that they had completed prior to the meeting.  Governors discussed and agreed the actions that needed to be taken as a result.  The audit was updated and reviewed by the Personnel and Communications Committee.
